This and That

This and That

To kick off the new year, artists in the Open Sketchbook mentorship program developed new work under the subject Everything's Related and monthly theme This and That. Weekly projects were based on a pair of ideas with the This sketchbook drawings generating the That artworks formed outside the sketchbook on a variety of surfaces including envelopes, cardboard, assorted papers and synthetic grounds. A wide range of materials and processes were used to express connections between these coupled ideas and dual formats and allowed images to manifest in new and exciting ways.

Our monthly themes have included Rivers and Roads, Forms and Forces, Marks and Movements and Edges and Openings. January's This and That exercises and projects were inspired by winter ice patterns, precious objects fitting in the palm of one's hand, Ruth Asawa's biomorphic sculptures and the realms of darkness and light. Artists found novel approaches to express connections to their material processes and subjects as they moved from within the confines of the sketchbook to other types of surfaces. This transition provided space to consider scale, texture, format shape and other media.

The works below represent the wonderful expressive stylings of each of the artists and their commitment to creative exploration and experimentation.
