Summer Sketchbooks offers students the opportunity to explore their sketchbooks while engaging with a lively variety of subjects, ideas, methods, and materials. Thinking about the sketchbook as a portable studio, weekly prompts will encourage students to step outside and find inspiration in the living world. We will investigate the textures, rhythms, patterns, shapes, and colors of the natural environment near our homes, our neighborhoods, or our chosen locations. Contemporary approaches will allow for a wide range of visual experimentation and lead to technical and conceptual growth by way of drawing, painting, mixed-media, collage, photography, and writing.
Weekly one-on-one Zoom meetings will provide structured time for reviewing sketchbook pages and related works, conversations about technical and material approaches suitable for books, and discussions about ways to expand on new ideas outside of the sketchbook. During our weekly Tuesday evening group meetings we will work together on creative projects related to the history of artist's sketchbooks, environmental concerns, and unconventional materials.
Early registration is highly recommended to secure a recurring one-hour weekly one-on-one meeting time. Enrolled students will be contacted for appointment scheduling after checkout.
